Documentary editor Alex Fry recently collaborated again with inspirational and remarkable director Penny Woolcock on ‘One Mile Away’.
‘One Mile Away’ traces the slow, cautious process of convincing other gang members to support the often faltering peace process. Most of them, it’s repeatedly emphasised, have grown up knowing no other way of life; as one young gang member explains to Woolcock, “What looks terrible to you looks normal to us.”
Highlighted as Philip Kemp’s film of the week on a recent BFI blog, this authored documentary directed by award-winning filmmaker Penny Woolcock charts the attempts by two warring gangs in inner city Birmingham, the Burger Bar Boys (B21) and the Johnson Crew (B6), to bring peace to their neighbourhoods.
