In the last ten years, Whetham has been cutting documentary, factual television and film for UK broadcasters, including BBC, Channel 4, Vice, Al Jazeera, Channel 5 and other international channels. He has enjoyed editing current affairs, observational, drama documentary and natural history formats. This long-form work gets him involved very early in the scripting process and Whetham has a solid instinct for the essential story, how it should expand, develop and resolve. Most of his work requires great attention to tension and pacing; he is equally absorbed crafting a slowly unfolding observation, a dramatic action scene or a lightning fast montage.
Whetham is an experienced musician and takes a keen interest in how to drive and colour stories with sound design and music – an excellent conduit between director and composer. His academic background is in biological sciences, he graduated with a BSc in Botany from Canterbury University, New Zealand.
